Of the very first day…
“What does a piping engineer do?” If you ask some people around you this question, surely you will receive the likely answer: “I’ve got no idea.” Piping engineering appears to be a strange terminology to those who do not work in technology field. Up till now, this subject has not yet been taught at any university or college in Vietnam. Knowing this fact, we deeply understood the difficulties CIMAS faced in setting up one department with the major of piping engineering over 10 years ago.
Started from July 2001, CIMAS Piping Department has grown from its humble team of about twenty engineers. All of them were fresh graduates from mechanical departments. Five years studying at the university provided them with background of mechanical technology in general. Yet, piping engineering, in particular, is still a brand new definition to them.
Thus, the first generation of piping department had to start from a bare beginning. In a short time, numerous fundamental piping principles and professional trainings were delivered to CIMAS engineers. These young engineers, with great thirst for knowledge and burning enthusiasm for devotion, made all efforts to quickly master this new field. It was them who laid the first bricks to build up reinforced mental foundation for piping department. Up till now, Piping Department continues to pursue the development roadmap and, step by step, matures through training courses and actual project execution.

Surely, background knowledge, modern software and computer skills educated at the university are not enough for a newcomer to become a piping designer. Therefore, a series of training courses are compulsory to all engineers entering our Piping Department.
Each piping engineer has to undergo fundamental lessons, piping concepts, professional software, numerous international as well as Vietnamese codes and standards. One experienced engineer with 8- year service at CIMAS shared: “When we came here, we were ‘innocent’ engineers, just like a white paper. At this moment, I can proudly say that we have obtained the most updated technology. Instead of the simple engineering before, thanks to modern techniques, we can build up piping models, extracting isometric drawings which include a bill of materials and exporting two dimensional piping arrangements as well as piping layout drawings in integration with pipe support location design, etc.”
Besides engineering design works, our piping engineers have been involved in the supervising, testing and commissioning work at construction sites where we could make the comparison between design in office and true piping installation works. With such projects as BangChak in Thailand, CCP Phenol in Mainland China, Vung Ang 1 Thermal Power plant, Phu My 3 Combined Circled Power plant in Vietnam, our piping engineers not only enriched the design knowledge but also thicken experiences at jobsite.

As the “backbone” of piping engineering design, piping layout plays a fundamental role and is always considered the top priority. Some key engineers were dispatched abroad for individual professional training. Practical exercises and actual on-job training works help them deeply understand what they had learnt. Coming back to CIMAS, these engineers have been working together as a team in design stage. They successfully cooperated with CTCI in projects such as: RFCC, CPC No.6, IR-II. And now, as members of a mature engineering section, these engineers can be fully responsible for piping layout of projects, including Meiko II, Shin Estu, Vung Ang, with high quality, competitive cost and minimum recycle work.
One crucial factor deciding the failure or success of a project is material selection. It is the fundamental criteria for one project to be workable and competitive. Realizing the importance of material in piping design, in 2009, CIMAS sent 3 engineers to CTCI headquarters for specializing on this aspect in an effort to motivate this capability. By 2012, for the first time, CIMAS independently set up material specification for the local project of MESSER ASU at Hai Duong province. Material engineers use Piping Material Control Systems (PMCS) for piping, pipe support, insulation, painting and wrapping to produce reports. They help piping engineers check if the information, data of material and design drawing are consistent with each other. Once completed, surplus order material rates are reduced.
Pipe Support and Stress Analysis
Two items of no less importance in piping design are pipe support and stress analysis. If they are omitted, our design may fail. That is the reason why engineers being in charge of this section must be very wise, enthusiastic and careful. Based on their knowledge and experience, these experts will foresee and recommend the best solution for piping design in term of stress to ensure that the piping system is workable and smooth. Besides manual calculation, stress analysis experts must be familiar with CEASAR II software and have overall understandings about all items in piping design. By 2009, CIMAS had been completely in charge of this section without support from the mother company. In the time to come, stress analysis continues to be the main section that we focus on.

In recent years, fire accidents have occurred frequently due to the lack or weakness of fire fighting system. As a result, fire fighting in industrial or civil buildings draws much concern of owners and customers. Based on the actual requirements of each project, we choose suitable fire fighting standards, select right equipments and apply pertinent methods to maximize the efficiency of this system. With the support of in-house tools, our piping engineers now are of full capability to design the whole fire fighting system by producing fire water piping loops, data sheet, tie-points connected to the above ground piping system. Of projects that CIMAS has designed fire fighting system, up till now, Formosa Textile Processing Plant – Phase 2, FHS ASU, NhonTrach PVC Sticking Tape factory are outstanding ones.

Computer-aid design (CAD) Specialist
Five years ago, some featured works of piping design, such as setting up the project design system, updating material data bank, modeling basic components, setting up the format of output drawings, creating model review of 3D modeling designs were made by CTCI since CIMAS had no CAD Specialist. With an aim to “standing on our own foot,” CIMAS sent brilliant engineers to CTCI for training. Consequently, CIMAS can do this by itself and becomes more mature after some project execution. At this moment, CIMAS has not yet done all CAD specialist works for all projects. But the growth that CIMAS has obtained in the past few years enables us to “dream” a better future.
Seen as the fundamental premise for the beginning of each project, Plot Plan is still a target for CIMAS to pursue in the coming years. Throughout CIMAS’s development history, CIMAS has set up and fulfilled piping function sections step by step. Plot Plan has started to be done by CIMAS people, yet in initial and simple stages. The endeavor and determination that CIMAS engineers keep in mind promisingly drive us forward.
Throughout the history of 12-year growth, Piping Department always surpasses others in both size and workload. Playing the prominent role in the company, piping engineers always show their best talent and devotion for the development of their department in particular and the whole company in general. “We believe in the future of CIMAS because we move ahead with unstoppable spirit”, shared by many young piping engineers.
